review 1: I'm sure there are many reviews out there of this book about the author's tribute to her sister which took the form of reading and reviewing books throughout the period of a year. I listened to this story narrated by Coleen Marlo, and think that this is the best type of book among the many genres she narrates. She treats these personal memoir stories as though she were reading her own memoir. She seems most herself in these and that makes for a good listen. As it was, I listened to this one twice now. I can relate to this book well and to the author's experience having lost someone close because when I hear how she speaks of grief it reminds me of how I was hit by similar feelings and thoughts when my mother passed away. Then, also, I can relate to it because in a similar ... morefashion, I began writing about art and grief in a blog a year or so after she died. I went on a similar pilgrimage and am still on that path that seems to go on as far as the eye can see. The desire to hold someone close and relate to them in a new dimension through creative acts seems to have a universal pull---or at least for a good share of people who like that sort of thing. It is inspiring to hear about her process and to recognize some of my own ideas. Magical Reading, a reference to the book about grieving, which I have yet to read, called My year of Magical Thinking, is apt. Grieving is experienced almost as a different dimension. Though, I thought maybe I would be hearing the synopses of all kinds of books in whole, this was nevertheless a wonderful reference almost for books to acquire next. I took a break from The Story of Spanish to read one she recommended, which was so lovely I recently gave it as a gift: The Guest Cat, by Hiroide. I plan to go check out Sankovitch's website to get some more recommendations.
review 2: Sankovitch definitely has a way with words, and I imagine her reviews of the books she read during her "year of reading" are very interesting and well-done. However, I found this book to be rather disorganized, which kept me from being able to enjoy her writing. I also thought that some of her literary references were quite forced. This book did have some great moments of writing, but it fell short overall. (2.5 stars) less
