Synopsis: Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.
Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, This Song Will Save Your Life is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.
My Rating:5/5 starts
Thoughts immediately after reading it: I’m in love with this book! It is definitely going to be added to my favourites list.
For the longest time I didn’t picked up this book because I felt it would be a cliché book and it would be a lot about music. Let me explain why I thought that way. The synopsis said it was about a girl who was trying to fit in, and the first thing I thought was that there has already been so many books like that. I was so wrong!
Since the title said something about song. And I consider myself a music illiterate, I was scared that it would be yet another book talking a lot about things that I don’t know anything about. And I was right. Music was a large part of it, but there was so much more.
I read the first sentence and it went something like this: “You think it’s so easy to change yourself. You think it’s easy, but it’s not.”
And then I just kept reading and everything felt so relatable, it blew off my mind. I knew that I had to read it, right away. So, I did and finished it as soon as I could.
- Elise Demworski
She is a social outcast at her school since fourth grade. She doesn’t has any friends, and tries to change herself to fit in, but obviously fails. I’ve read so many characters like that, but none had ever felt so relatable like Elise. It’s not a cliche character. So, don’t give up on this book for that!
- Elize’s relationship with her parents
Thank God the parents weren’t some evil monsters like in all other YA books! Although her parents were divorced, they took good care of her. They loved her even though they didn’t always understood her.
- Char
I don’t entirely like him, but I think his character is realistic. This book doesn’t follow the usual YA trope of “love/boy solves everything”.
- There is a lot of music?
Which I don’t understand, of course. But I think it would be good for other reader who love music.
And of course, if you are music illiterate pumpkin like me then also, there are a lot of things other than music going on in this book. So, you would feel like less of a pumpkin?
What didn’t I liked? I can’t think of anything that I don’t like about this book. And I’m thinking really hard. How is this possible.
Let’s not make my pumpkin brain burst from all this thinking. We can say that I don’t hate anything about this book, which doesn’t usually happen, but anyways…
