review 1: The good: This book expands on the world introduced in the previous book, letting us see what life is like for the common people in the empire (particularly the capital city). The ways in which everyone's adjusted to a giant tree sprouting up in their city is fun, and I liked how much more colorful the world has gotten now that it's got godlings running around everywhere. The not so good: This might be a silly thing to complain about, but the first book managed to end on a happy note in spite of overwhelming odds, so I was a little surprised that this one sort of went out of its way to have a bittersweet ending. The ??: Having a blind main character is new and interesting - you don't get a lot of that, particularly in fantasy novels. Having a blind person who can magic... moreally see a lot of the time...seems like cheating? I'm not blind, so I don't know how to judge how well this was handled, but based on a couple reviews I saw, this might be a little insensitive - the blind version of the "magical autistic person". Or, maybe that's me being overly sensitive. It's hard for me to judge.
review 2: So good. I think the only reason it took so long to finish is because Jemisin's story is so expansive and twisty that reading bits at odd moments is too ... distracting/jumbled/something that I couldn't actually get into it without immersing myself in it. Hurray for long-ish flights though, because once I got into the story I didn't even notice the normal airplane annoyances. (Except in the last part, where I had to remind myself not to cry on the plane so as not to freak anybody out.)I did miss Yeine at first, but really enjoyed Oree once I got to know her. And Shiny -- who knew I'd grow to like him so much after book 1. I so want to read Sieh's story that I'm tempted to pay Canadian book prices (even tho my library has it for free if I can wait a week!) less

I enjoyed this as much as the first book, although it is quite different, except in that it has a female heroine. The first book was essentially the story of Nahadoth. This second book was the story of Itempas. The third book should be the story of Yeine, but it seems like the story of Sieh. But each book essentially stands alone on its own merits - although they should have included Itempas's sentence at the beginning of this book. The world gets substantially bigger and more developed in this book and I enjoyed the addition of more Godlings and the development of Shiny's character.I wasn't entirely happy with the ending, but I loved the book.

I'm not sure I understood even half of this. I'm having an extremely stressful week at work and it's been hard to compartmentalize and read a story set in a completely different world with complex situations and characters. I enjoyed what little I read and was able to process - especially because the author has a real gift for describing horrific things in a very sensible, soft yet impactful way. The main character is disabled, which was also extremely interesting to read about. I enjoyed this, I just wish I could have enjoyed all of it.

Not as good as the first, still pretty good though.
