review 1: Well, it wasn't nearly as strong as the first book in the series, but it was still a good read. The plot was a bit scattered and there was too much exposition at times, but it was fascinating to learn more about the world and how it had changed since the events of the first book.I enjoyed it overall, and I'm now reading the third book in the series, which is shaping up absolutely wonderfully so far.
review 2: This book did everything right. Besides having clearly non-white protagonists, having female characters who displayed a full range of human emotions without being considered less because of it, and using beautiful lyrical prose? This book tells a story; a sequel story, but nonetheless independent of the first book and quite easy for a reader who has stumbl
... moreed upon this gem to jump into. While I enjoyed the first book, this book falls quite close to love for me. I also felt that the author's writing style definitely improved; while I found the first book to read a little bit slowly, The Broken Kingdom's beautiful imagery in no way slows down or takes away from the story. To be fair, there was less of a need to explain the universe in which the characters live. However, to paraphrase the author, it really is an aesthetic as much as a story. Are you reading this series yet? You should be! less

I LOVE this book. Even more than the first, which I did not think I would at first. This book took me longer to be enraptured by, but ultimately I think this fulfills and extends the potential and promise of the first book by miles. It is beautiful and vivid in its imagery. Oree, the narrator, is as complex and intriguing as Yeine was. Her love story does not at all feel like a retelling of Yeine's even though the two stories share similarities. In some ways, the politics of this book are not quite as intriguing as the first but I found the character development to be even more engaging, especially in terms of Shiny.Furthermore, the ending leaves me super excited for the third book! This author is just amazing!

Excellent. Liked it much better than the first one, and I didn't dislike the first one, so.I am so intrigued by her gods. They're both human and inhuman; they're more like monsters, or very powerful aliens, to me. I have to admit, the mythology of it doesn't resonate deeply with me, but there's still a lot here to chew over. The politics and ethics of it are where I connect, rather than the symbolic level.
