review 1: This book had all the problems of the first Dreamblood book - critical elements poorly explained, underwhelming plot twists - with the added downgrade of flatter characters and a more melodramatic story. Parts of it verged into soap opera territory, and the end completely broke down into a romance. For a five hundred page book it felt strangely rushed, and there was only a single character death that managed any impact. Really disappointed because Jemisin did such a standout job with the Inheritance trilogy. I'll read her again, but not if her next book is set in this universe.
review 2: This book took me a while to get to, and I realize I was partly avoiding it because I didn't think I would be able to like new characters as much as Sunandi, Nijiri, and Eihru.
... more For the first few chapters, I wasn't feeling it, but eventually I got back into the world (I love Jemisin's world building), and then I finally started to get Hanani and Wanahomen, and I fell in love with the story. It seems a little more sprawling and less...even book than The Dreaming Moon (there are a lot more POVs), but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. less
