review 1: I've finally figured out what I dislike about Jemisin's books. They lack humor. The characters are always complex, the world building exquisite and yet they lack humor. No jokes or snide comments or innuendo... Just very seriously good writing. I love that the characters are people of color, that the worlds aren't re-named European countries, that women are more than love interests and have their own purposes. I love all of it. But the books feel like an utter slog because there's no fun in them at any point. We go from soul crushing revelation to soul crushing revelation and I don't like it. I want my fantasy escapist, I want wise cracks, I want some lightness
review 2: I haven't read many books in the fantasy genre, but I'm trying to broaden my reading intere
... morests. This book was pretty interesting in that it occurs in historical Africa. Again, there might be a whole sub-genre of fantasy books taking place in Africa, so forgive me if there is. It wasn't the best book, but it definitely has whetted my appetite for the genre. However, I most likely won't read the remaining books in the series. less
