review 1: I think this book has a lot of important things to say and has plot elements that are AWESOME to read about...but I did NOT enjoy it. The writing style just didn't click with me, it was full of inter-character conflict that served basically no purpose, and I had to MAKE myself finish it. By the time I was 70 pages from the end I almost quit just because I didn't really care how it turned out. That said, I want to read more from Okorafor in the hopes that her young adult fiction will grab me more than this did.
review 2: Who Fears Death is extremely well executed. The subject matter is serious and poignant and the main characters do a fantastic job of driving the plot. The African setting is also integral to the story, and takes on a life of its own as the novel
... more progresses. It's not a perfect novel (the main villain felt very "caricaturish", and characters act impulsively on multiple occasions even when they CLEARLY should know better), but it gets a lot of things right, and it really draws you into the plight of the main protagonist. Looking forward to reading more from the author. less
