review 1: Ms Okorafor has followed the admonition of Chinua Achebe that, "If you don't like someone's story, write your own." The opening story, "The Magic Negro," shoves a stick of dynamite up a tiresome plot device of American cinema and launches our journey with a bang. In the loom of magical realism, she deftly weaves the threads of Western materialism and West African beliefs into a mesmerizing cloth. My favorites were the terrifying "On The Road," the provoking "Spider the Artist" and the cheeky, "The Palm Tree Bandit."
review 2: Interesting to see some of the background work for her novels come to play in short story form. And of course, always interesting to see how Okorafor brings outsiders into her pieces as skeptics facing the shock and awe of supernatural
... moreforces that they really wish they could rationalize away, but then they are offered inescapable proof / experiences to the contrary that demand belief. Or just skin-crawling horror. Take your pick. less
