review 1: 3 and a half stars. I was at the library when the title of this book caught my eye. With the current events transpiring in Ukraine, I was intrigued by this read. I was not familiar with the author but the synopsis interested me. It was billed as a thriller, and I would say it delivered as a popular thriller. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Washington, DC area as well as the areas where Alex, the main character, traveled, which include Ukraine and Venezuela. The book reminded me of people I have met who have had the wonderful opportunity to travel the globe, this book is a globalist read for certain. I enjoyed the political background of the Orange Revolution as well as other well researched political background. My only complaint was some of the political commentary on ... moreVlad Putin and Hugo Chavez, they were made out to be perpetrators of vast crimes against humanity when in reality they are slightly authoritarian yet are held in high esteem in their own society. The book, like the US media has made these two into boogeyman because they are anti capitalist, there are far more atrocious leaders in the world committing crimes against humanity, I'm looking at you Saudi Arabia, a key US ally. This is an opinion of mine and most likely would not be the opinion of most people reading this book, which is published by a Christian publishing company. The Christian slant is not over done by any means and the book never seems preachy, the main character is plainly a Christian and that is the extent of that. I do have one character critique. The book uses historically accurate characters which I enjoy, but the current president is not well described. The book was published in 2008 so Barrack Obama and John McCain were the presidential candidates, (Spoiler Alert) the president has an attempted assassination against him during his visit to the Ukraine. I understand not wanting to declare the president one of the two possible candidates, especially Obama, the first African American president, for the fear that this book would be promoting an assignation attempt, which it wouldn't be but I do understand not declaring the current president. Yet the book does little to describe the president, when all other characters are fully developed, the only insight on the president is "he is an extremist from the current party." There is no further development of the character, this is one flaw of the book, which is otherwise rather decently written. I digress, all in all this book was well paced never dragging with believable situations. The dialogue and descriptions as well as the prose were all adequately written. This is book one of the series and I will probably read the other two books, but not in a rush to do so.
review 2: A supposed spy novel/thriller, this book needed an editor or at the bare minimum a proofreader. Two times in less than a page the author makes the same comparison of height and weight and three times in the same section describes how long it had been since the main character had practiced firing her weapon ( although the time frame changed each time!). This gem had me laughing out loud: "Trim, twenty-nine, and with long legs that seemed chiseled from all the workouts, she drew the usual set of approving and admiring glances from the predominately male clientele".... On second thought, this might be a 1-star read. less
