review 1: Extremely well researched, fascinating story of Yemeni Jews. BUT---Plot weaves and bumps throughout a story with a promise of history when history has no relevance. Strange that Yemeni Jews would use Yiddish! Inordinate amount of time spent on narrator's childhood then whoosh- new/old love is found in new/ old Eretz Israel. And what about all that beautifully detailed magical Henna ? I want more of that!
review 2: I truly loved this book. This was one of the most interesting pieces of historical fiction that I have read in a long time. Nomi Eve's knowledge of the culture, history, and language of this forgotten but important period in history of the Jews of Yemen is truly remarkable. Her descriptive style is so beautiful that I found myself re-reading passages
... morejust to take it all in. The compelling story and vivid characters kept me captivated throughout the entire novel. less

I didn't finish this book. Got about half way and lost interest.

Really long. About 100 pages less would have been better.
