review 1: I haven't read much YA fiction in recent years but I'd read a couple of reviews of this and it sounded good. It was good, I loved it. I loved it so much I've actually given it 5 stars which is unthinkable for me, a solid 3 star giver! It just felt very realistic and I tore through it (I think it took me a couple of hours which isn't bad for 381 pages). It was funny and the characters were well developed. Perhaps the one snag for me was that some of the characters seemed older than they were because of the things they were doing. Then I thought back (a depressing ten years) to when I was 15 and realised that actually some people were behaving like this even back then.
review 2: "Trouble' had been on my reading radar for a while yet whenever I went to buy it, it ... morealways seemed to be sold out- ironically a good sign.! I started out finding Hannah's character a bit much. She made for uncomfortable reading, even for me, a teacher of teens for the past 19 yrs. Then I realised this was exactly the plan: we see Hannah as others see her- brash, confident, boy mad. So when her vulnerabilities do come through, we learn how complex her world really is.Aaron I liked from the start. He's geeky, thoughtful, troubled. Again, he's a complicated character. Whilst acknowledging peer pressure he doesn't, unlike Hannah, feel he has to fit in.This book deals with many important issues- some are foregrounded, some are quite subtle. It's not just a story about pregnancy. It's about modern day teenagers in a believably difficult world. This is UKYA at its finest. less
