review 1: While there are a few nuggets to be found in this book, most of the book attempts to cram the Psalms into three categories: time, space, and matter. This seems to be forced and muddles the beauty of the Psalms. It is also a bit confusing and at times I wondered exactly what the author was trying to communicate. One thing that annoyed me about this book is the regular references to the author's other books--it was like having a stream of advertisements in-line while reading. Footnoting them would have been much better. The last chapter regarding the author's experiences with the Psalms was the best part of the book.
review 2: This wonderful book is not so much an in depths commentary of the Psalms as it is an earnest plea for the church to return to them much and
... moreoften in it's worship of the living God. Wright points out eloquently why the Psalms are meant to be sung together and prayed together as a whole, and not just as disjointed favorite verses here and there. The Psalms are telling the storyof God and the story of his people. One may do deep study into much of scripture but to truly embrace the Psalms as they were intended, they must be treated as poetry to be sung and prayers to be prayer. I only wish Wright would have gone into the Imprecatory Psalms more. It's very hard for Christians to know what to do with such Psalms in worship when they seem to be so clearly in opposition to the gospel of peace that Jesus brings. That is a very small complaint and I realize that an in depth analysis of the psalms was not Wright's point so I don't want to harp on that point too much. This is a wonderful book that is well worth your time, especially if you are a pastor or a planner of worship services. The importance of worshipping with the Psalms is not lost here. His personal stories in the conclusion of the book are worth the price of the book, even if nothing else was included. less

Good writing and examples. Several overlaps to other N.T. Wright books.

A bit slow going at times, but the final chapter makes it worth while.
