review 1: Brutally honest memoir of a young girl in Yemen who is forced to marry an older man who proceeds to abuse her. She manages to escape and gets a divorce. I would have liked more of a description of her life while married; instead, the story keeps jumping between the beginning of the story and the trial itself. I would have preferred a straight chronological story. Because of the disturbing nature of its contents (child and sexual abuse), I wouldn't actively recommend this to anyone younger than a 10th grader.
review 2: The story of Nujood standing and speaking up of her right to say no is indeed inspiring. Sometimes we ourselves get confused because of social pressure; when the society tells how you should behave when it's clearly going against your rights.
... moreI can understand how confused Nujood must have been when no one even asked her opinion about her marriage, whether she's for it or against it since in the yemeni culture, women doesn't have the right to speak. However there's one negative aspect i find after reading this book. Indeed the sentences used in the book is simple and easy to understand. But it didn't bring out the 'feel' of the main character. that is Nujood. It could be a book more suitable for children. less
