review 1: This story is heartbreaking, but the writing is distracting. Clearly, Nujood Ali, a barely literate 10 year old, did not write, nor did she dictate, this book; because of this disparity, I found the voice used by the ghostwriter and translator somewhat distracting as I read the compelling story. The author's voice wanders in and out of grown adult/English woman and 10 year old Yemeni girl in a way that can be very disconcerting. That said, the story, of Nujood, married off at the tender age of 9, is an important one for people to read and understand. Three stars and recommended for people who enjoy reading about the ancient tribal cultures in some middle-Eastern countries.

... moret people with a ruff life.Read from September 5th to September 28, 2014 My english teacher recommended this book to me because she thought i would like to read since i don't really like to read. I did actually like it, in fact i loved it. Just for the simple fact that i enjoy genres like it. The story was about a 10 year old girl names Nujood. She lived in a home in Sana, Yemen. Her family was poor and had other siblings to take care of and in her religion your family chooses who she will marry. Her father chose a 30 year old man, this man abused her for 8 months and used her for sex. One day she was supposed to run an erin and she ran away from home. She found a court house and demanded to speak to a judge.. she told her story and said she wanted a divorce. Since going home wouldnt be the right thing one of the workers took her in there own home cleaned her up and fed her. The judge granted her wish and got her , her divorce. I really enjoyed this book and i now look at muslims differently cause you really never know what there life is or was like. And how pretty they might be under there uniform. less

It's crazy to think that there are still places in the world today that force young girls to marry older men that they don't even know. I can't even fathom why anyone thinks this is a good idea. The courage of this young girl is amazing and admirable. I'm so happy she got out of the horrible situation she was forced into by her father. She is doing great things by sharing her story. The book itself was average but the message is an important one to share.

I believe the Yemen culture affected Nujood's story most. Nujood Ali is married off at age 10 to a cruel husband. Her father marries her off because he and his family need money and he can't keep a regular job for very long. After several months of her husband's abuse, Nujood decides to take her problems to court and get a divorce. She is the first to do something like this in her community. Nujood has inspired so many girls married under the legal age.

If you read this book as a memoir, you'll be disappointed. This book was written to raise awareness.
