review 1: Beck Phillips is always in the middle of some kind of trouble---if it isn't finding him, he's causing it. But trouble starts to go in some really strange directions when Beck moves in with his uncle in Kingsplot. Plants have taken an interest in his personal life, his uncle is probably insane, and then there are the dragons. . .Pillage is two stories in one: the modern-day misadventures of Beck Phillips, and folded in at the start of each chapter, a page from the history of the Pillage family. The details of their gift, their mistake, and their curse are straight out of a book of fairy tales. But what makes it more interesting is that Beck himself is tangled up in the messy aftermath of what should have been nothing more than a story.Beck makes a wonderful narrator; the un... moredercurrents of his troubled family life clearly affect his actions, but he's also got the kind of bullheadedness that will pick a fight with the school bully just to speed up the process of making an enemy. The short chapters burst with action, humor, and wacky characters. And just when it seems the story's going down a predictable path, things veer sharply and everything turns on its head.Overall it's a good read. The ending might be a bit too neat, with the complete about-face from certain characters, but the ride is a lot of fun. I rate this book Recommended.
review 2: The book started out interestingly enough, but I found myself bored with the middle and then the ending was kind of abrupt, there could have been a lot more clues and build up to the ending that would have made it more interesting. Interesting plot, but fell short, probably wouldn't bother getting the next two books, but the book I bought was the complete trilogy, so I'm just hoping it gets better! less

Enjoyed the character development. There was an interesting twist where the dragons were concerned.

For some reason, I didn't like this as much. It was pretty good though.
