review 1: I love immigrant tales of the displaced. Likewise, stories of burgeoning adulthood in a mixed-up world is right up my alley & this compelling debut by a twenty-something & female Azerbaijani Jew whose family had fled from ethnic cleansing to Germany is along those lines & themes. With a comic sensibility that is deadpan & quirky, Grjasnowa takes her protagonist Masha, she of many languages, through very personal grief (her boyfriend, Elias, is injured from playing soccer & declines rather rapidly...) & through failed romantic & sexual endeavors to, finally, Israel where she settles in amongst the highly complex political climate & a multi-cultural set of friends. I loved her sparse prose & dry sentences; some cut like a knife with a strangely poetic beauty. It was a random... more read for me - the title & minimalist jacket design had me fixated immediately.
review 2: Fängt stark an, Schlag-auf-Schlag-artig. Viele kulturelle Verweise, die alle schlüssig und nie gekünstelt klingen. Habe auch einiges über das Judentum gelernt, weil ich bei einigen Fremdwörtern zunächst auf Wikipedia nachschlagen wollte. Gegen Mitte des Buches fällt die Kurve jedoch rapide, es passiert zwar einiges, aber es ist belanglos, unzusammenhängend. Man nimmt der Protagonistin ihr Leiden und ihre Trauer nicht mehr ab und die Distanz, die durch den Schreibstil entsteht ist zwar bewusst gesetzt, erfüllt jedoch keinen Zweck. Das Ende ist schräg, aber emotionslos und ohne Fragezeichen. less
