review 1: Gut, ich geb's zu: Ich habe mir dieses Buch gekauft, weil mir der Titel gefallen hat. "Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt" - das fand ich sehr poetisch und wohlklingend und hoffte auf ebensolche Prosa.Brrr. Weit gefehlt. Poesie und Wohlklang der Sprache sind wohl das letzte, was einem zu diesem Werk einfallen könnte. Olga Grjasnowa schreibt kühl und nüchtern, präzise und relativ emotionslos. Das ist messerscharfe Prosa, die (be-)sticht. SPOILER!!!Beschrieben wird das Leben einer jungen Migrantin, die aus Aserbaidschan nach Deutschland kommt, dort zur Schule geht und ein Dolmetsch-Studium absolviert. Traumatisch sind nicht nur die Ereignisse, die sie in Baku während des Krieges erleben musste, nein, auch in Deutschland findet sie keinen Frieden. Der Tod ihres Lebens... moregefährten nach einer Oberschenkeloperation kommt unerwartet und wirft die junge Frau vollends aus der Bahn. So zieht es sie schließlich nach Israel; ein Land, genauso im Innern zerrissen wie sie selbst. Fazit: Hervorragend geschrieben, wenngleich auch nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte. Verstörend und gelegentlich auch qualvoll zu lesen, dennoch oder grade deswegen sehr empfehlenswert.
review 2: This novel is both beautifully moving and lacking at the same time. After trying to come to terms with why I didn't find it only the former, I think I put my finger on it: Grjasnowa's topic is moving and passionate, her treatment of it is not always so. Our experience of the Armenian pogrom in Baku, the hostility of modern Germany to immigrants, and the violence in Israel-Palestine are filtered through the troubled but emotionally flat experience of Masha, the Russian Jew from Azerbaijan living in Germany then Israel. Granted, Masha is meant to be shattered by grief and trauma, but still even in her pain, her character is oddly static, and hence the material refracted through her becomes static. It wasn't that I wasn't moved, and the writing in places is gorgeous, the observations on displacement sometimes insightful. It was that I'd wished Masha had been given more of a range of feeling and action. As it is, she wanders lost and hurting from first to last page, crossing paths with other exiles like herself, and there is not much development or revelation or change of any kind, just more piling up of details some of which are worthy but together don't quite add up. Again, I think it's the topic that saves the novel, and it's a voice that needs to be heard in German literature, in world literature, but ultimately I had a sense that Grjasnowa is getting started and will find more range, but hasn't quite done it here. less
