The Hangman's Daughter
review 1: This time it is the big strong hangman that needs the most help. He is held prisoner in the bustling city of Regensburg for much of the story. Magdalena and Simon travel to this city for a different reason after the hangman, Kuisl is already imprisoned there for killing his sister and brother-in-law, owners of a successful bathhouse. The biggest questions of the book are: Why is he being framed? Who is the enemy of his past whose name is on the tip of his tongue? Can his daughter and her medicus boyfriend find the answers to get him out of this bind?As the other books in the series, this book is full of great adventure and action. I had solved a few minor mysteries within the first 20 pages, but still enjoyed this book tremendously!
review 2: What I enjoy most
... moreabout the Hangman's Daughter series of novels (of which this is the third) is that the central characters are both likeable and flawed. Jakob, the hangman, is proud and psychologically damaged by his mercenary past, Magdalena, his daughter, is hotheaded and stubborn, and Simon, her Doctor lover, is vain and occasionally conceited. Their relationships, however, are warm, and the sacrifices each is prepared to make for the others is an underlying theme within this book. This story departs from the usual setting of Schongau, and for the most part takes place in the Imperial city of Regensburg. The author admits that the story is a lovel letter to the city, and includes a recommended tour around the city at the end of the novel, featuring locations from the book. I won't spoil the twists and turns of the plot, but this adventure also gives us more info about Jakob's past as a mercenary, including his first meeting with his wife.I accidentally read this book before the second novel, but each story in the series seems to be self-contained, so it didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. less

The beginning of this was very violent and brutal and it kinda put me off. But, this is medieval Bavaria so they was a lot of violence going around. It’s an accurate description of the times, but be warned the beginning hits you hard. But, it calms down after that.Other than that I really enjoyed it. I liked the various characters, they all really stood out. The Venetian ambassador was very charming, the beggar king was the guy you didn’t want to like but did, and Simon and Magdalena were as passionate as ever. The interesting part about this book that separates it from the others in the series is focuses more on Simon and Magdalena. It’s up to them to solve the mystery instead of the hangman. For once it’s him that needs the saving and I really liked the new dynamic.Once again great mystery! I had a really hard time telling who it was. The plot was genius the whole plan was really thought out.The only complaint I have is that it did seem to get slow at parts. Other than that I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the next one, The Poisoned Pilgrim.

Third in the Hangman's Daughter series. This one takes place in Regensburg. The Hangman goes to visit his ailing sister, only to be framed as soon as he gets there for the murder of her and her husband. In prison he gets subjected to the same tortures he has visited on others to extract a "confession." Daughter Magdalena and her physician boyfriend have run away to the city so they can be together. While there they find out what has happened to her dad and try to explore the scene of the crime. The house burns while they are there so they are now accused of arson. They are assisted by the king of the beggars. Lots of action and narrow escapes throughout. And more good author notes at the end about the real places in Regensburg.
