The Hangman's Daughter
review 1: A murder mystery in medieval Bavaria... seriously? It's like this book was written for me. It is fast moving, reads like an action movie, and kept me formulating and reformulating theories about the evil-doers until almost the end. It can be gruesome at times, and the whole murder of children thing is almost unstomachable. I had to put the book down a few times and go do something happy. Overall, though, a great book! So glad it is part of a series!
review 2: This book was not really what I expected. I was hoping for something more like The Historian, Dracula, etc. I thought it would be creepy, dark, and a big mystery- but it is a much lighter read with moments of humor. It wasn't bad, but I felt like it was more of a bait and switch- especially with the syn
... moreopsis and the stark cover. Also, this has very little to do with the hangman's daughter- much more about the hangman and a town doctor. I don't think I'll read the rest of the trilogy- but if any of my friends read this review and have a different opinion, let me know! less

I liked the suspense and the mystery that kept the pages turning, but at times it was a little obvious and sometimes obnoxious how often the author was withholding information from the reader. Also, the romance was completely unbelievable, and I would have preferred that it hadn't been there at all. A man who has a tendency to forget about his woman, even when she's been kidnapped and possibly tortured, has no understanding of romance or love at all.

Not unenjoyable, but not amazing either. It's a decent enough mystery, and both the premise and historical grounding are interesting enough, but that's about it really. It's all a bit predictable and anticlimactic. You don't really get attached to any if the characters. And why it's named "The Hangman's Daughter" when she's just a weak supporting character at best is a bit beyond me. Meh. Holiday time filler.

Starts out super dark but turns into an intriguing mystery. I enjoyed this book.
