The Hangman's Daughter
review 1: I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting and mysterious in addition to being well developed. The story is captivating and the mystery is pretty confusing. There was a lot of action as well as riddles and twists and turns. The hangman and his daughter are great characters and I can't wait to read more about them. This book was more fast paced than the first one, which made it hard to put down. The ending was interesting and I was surprised by the conclusion and how many different components came together and fit. These mysteries are very different from others I have read and I will definitely continue the series.
review 2: All the things that worked well in Hangman's Daughter felt trite and flat in this sequel. The sweet affair between M
... moreagdalena and her young doctor becomes tedious as they argue over silly things. The Hangman is more Indiana Jones than a tragic, historical figure, searching for signs of the Templar and solving puzzles before he is killed. I'd liked how well the mystery was woven into history in the first book. In this, the mystery becomes primary and the characters are pulled out of the history that made them interesting. It could have been set in any time, so the characters created in the previous story became irrelevant. less

Very rare that I actually enjoy a follow up novel better than the original in a seriesh nur Auch was the case for The Dark Monk. Less lurid than the first I enjoyed that it was a faster read because the characters had already been developed in the first novel. I enjoy history and mysteries and often this past year have had opportunities to be in some of the very same places Poetzch writes about. I loved the authors note and now have an excellent idea for a nice day Bavarian bike tour!
