review 1: I loved this second book as much, if not more, than the first one. This is the continuing story of the maid Charlotte Farrow. Oh the things she goes through and the choices she has to make trying to keep her son a secret and safe! Charlotte is a strong, courageous mother trying to do the best thing for her son. Your emotions will go up and down with the struggles she goes through. And you will rejoice with her in the end. I love the relationship between Archie and Charlotte and was glad to see him strive to have a better life than what he had being in service. I also liked the continuing relationship between Lucy and Charlotte. Lucy's friendship paves the way for Charlotte several times. I did not like the character of Sarah and wanted to slap her several times!... more She really should have been dismissed several times and I'm not sure what Lucy saw in her. Hopefully Sarah's character will be redeemed in the next book which is about her.
review 2: I read the first book in this series and am of the opinion that the first book was better than this one. I say that because I felt like this book repeated a lot of the same information that you learn in the first book. I would have liked this book a lot better if the author had shared more of the main character's past and childhood. Overall, this book is a good historical novel to read about the Chicago's World Fair of 1893. less
