review 1: I wanted to read a historical novel for quite a long time and I chose "The Pursuit of Lucy Banning" not least because of the appealing cover. I did enjoy the story of the emancipated Lucy Banning, her secret college classes and the kind of forbidden love between her and Will Edwards who I really liked as a character. Also the secret of her maid Charlotte and the challenge of keeping that secret were quite thrilling. And I really liked Olivia Newports style of writing. But at times it was hard to keep reading because the story kept repeating itself and the suspense just slipped away. I didn't like the figure of Daniel Jules, neither his role as Lucy's fiance nor the illness at the end. Lucy's mother as the always correct wife and lady of Chicago was also quite annoying.Somet... moreimes the reading of this book was really fun but at other times I nearly just put it down. So this is my end on the Avenue of Dreams, I'm not going to continue the series.
review 2: I wasn't sure how I'd like this book, because it was listed under inspirational romance on Amazon, and that's not my usual reading fare. But I love the Gilded Age as a historical setting, and found Olivia Newport to be very true to the time period without compromising her strong heroine. The romance didn't really seem to take center stage, so I almost feel like this should be better classified as romantic women's fiction. It was more about Lucy's development as a character than anything else. I also liked how she developed Charlotte (the maid) and set her up for her story to be told in the second book in the series (which I'm thinking of picking up).I also liked how, even though it's listed as an inspirational fiction story, it wasn't "preachy". The characters' faith was presented and used in an appropriate way, both to allow readers of all backgrounds to enjoy the story as well as being true to what people were like in the 1890s in terms of how faith and religion played into their lives. less
