Old Bear and Little Cub
review 1: The illustrations are gorgeous in this story, in which Little Cub and Old Bear 'find' one another and fill needs in each other's lives. From the perspective of adoption (this book came up under the topic heading in a library search), it may be problematic as Little Cub doesn't 'belong' to anyone before meeting Old Bear; thereby ignoring the existence of a birth family, and the narratives implies a high level of neglect before Little Cub meets Old Bear. On the plus side, it shows Little Cub happy, safe and secure with Old Bear, who can teach him the survival skills needed for him to become a grown-up bear.
review 2: Dorothy SchultzTED 23607/6/13The book I chose is Little Cub by Olivier Dunrea. My target audience is primary readers and the genre is a “picture bo
... moreok about friendship and caring.” My focus for a pre-reading strategy uses a: Picture Walk, which will discuss and predict the shape of the story from visual cues. The children can see Little Cub on the cover then as we turn the pages they can describe how sad Little Cub is and how he has trouble catching fish. I can ask questions such as Old Bear is carrying a fish he caught how could he teach Little Cub to catch a fish? I can get them to share how they think the cub must feel sleeping by his-self at night. Next ask them to describe Old Bear and how he must feel eating his supper alone with no one to talk to. Then ask what they predict will happen at the end of the story before I began reading the story out loud. Have you ever been scared to be by yourself, maybe when you’re in bed? That’s not a good feeling is it? I’m going to tell you about a little cub who also felt lonely and sometimes afraid. Little Cub he is hungry and afraid at night because he has no one to tuck him in at bedtime. In our story there is Old Bear who is sad because he is alone too. I wonder if Little Cub will ever find someone to help him find food in the forest or will tuck him in at night. I wonder if Old Bear will find a friend so he’s not lonely anymore. What do you think? If you like books about bears that live deep in the forest or books that make you feel special then you will want to read, Little Cub by Olivier Dunrea. less
