review 1: The background facts of Chernobyl were more interesting that the Nadia/Adam storyline. Nadia, it turns out, is the the daughter & niece to Ukraine thieves. They belonged to a group called vory y zakony (thieves with a common law).Nadia is led to believe there is a formula that can counteract radiation poisoning that is of course worth millions. She travels from Manhattan to Ukraine & Chernobyl to locate an uncle once thought dead. He has lived in Chernobyl (the Zone) still escaping a gulag and managed to father a son - Adam. Damian wants Nadia to get Adam out & in return she will get the formula.
review 2: Kindle/audioAdd another 1/2 star to that rating.I chose this book because it was offered through the Kindle Unlimited book and included the audio. I didn'... moret really expect much, but this book was good. It has a couple of issues. It reads like an action/suspense movie, things are constantly happening, which I liked. The author throws in history and information about some of the 'scene' settings, which if done in a better manner might not have felt like the flow of the action was interrupted. It was like, suspense, suspense, suspense,........the history of Chernobyl. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the back story, but somehow think it could have been done better. The other thing, some sentences were phrases with a period. I hate that. I have not checked to see if this was a translation, if it was then the translator didn't do a great job. (JUST CHECKED: nope, author was born in Connecticut) (Yes, I do see that I just composed a phrase and put a period at the end, but nobody is paying me to proof this and edit. I'd be happy to be paid for any of those things, I think I'd make a great editor.)The best thing? I find it is difficult to surprise me in a book and while some things I figured out pretty early, as in who some people really were, the ending had a twist that I really did not see coming. And then it may have had another twist! I will be reading the second book in this series, I did like it at least that much. less
