review 1: Excellent book about a war that is never talked about. The Crimean War is the 19th centuries' Korean conflict. It is not talked about much. Figg's did a great job explaining the war and how each side made massive blunders causing casualties. I walked away from this book with the thought that the Crimean war was a foreshadow of World War One. If you like history books with "meat" but not pretension, then this is your kind of book.
review 2: I picked this up hoping to deepen my understanding of the Crimean War in light of current political events in Ukraine. Though the book is generally well-written and certainly rich with primary source materials, there isn't that much new here. In an attempt to justify the publication of another in a long line of Crimean War
... more histories, Figes sets up the narrative by suggesting that previous accounts have neglected the religious dimensions to and justifications for the war. But the early parts of the book, where he pushes this theme the most, are the weakest. Figes is much, much stronger when writing about the conduct of the war itself, and thankfully, this constitutes the bulk of the text. But it also doesn't offer much that hasn't been told elsewhere. And when the war's finally over, the book declines again--rather aimlessly wandering through the geopolitical developments in Europe and Asia over the subsequent few decades and providing an ending that, though intended to provide a neat little tie back to the book's opening, feels forced and uninspired. less

Wouldn't want to share a beer with Figes, nor would I trust his research, but love his writing.
