review 1: Love this book! Knight night was one of the first storybooks my son would sit still for before bed.The steps of the story, from the hallway, to the stairs, to the bath, to brushing teeth, to saying goodnight to Rex, to putting things away and climbing into bed are all completely relatable to his tiny self ... He's completely attentive and savors each page. The illustrations are lovely - stylized and muted. They're simple and clear enough that my son "gets" them, but detailed enough that he is still noticing and enjoying new details, even on the hundredth (or is it the three hundredth?) reading. There is a page where he opens his bedroom door (which helpfully looks just like every boy's bedroom door) and he travels past several panels of a village and castle to do so. When ... moreI asked my son where the boy's door was, HE pointed out the teeny tiny version of the same door at the base of the castle, under the portcullis (which I had never noticed)The pretend element is neat - at this age, he is just learning pretend play, and I can see that that layer of the story will keep him interested for quite a time to come.
review 2: A good, but not spectacular, bed time story. When a little boy puts on his helmet (a colander to the rest of us), his home is transformed in to a magical kingdom, and he can begin his quest to go to bed.The art on this is appealing to my eyes, with strong, graphical shapes and a very distinct color palette. However, I'm not sure that the art would appeal to children, because of the somewhat monochromatic pages. I think it would depend on the kid!Fun story to read together, although it is very short. I don't think it would be great for a story time, because the stylized art doesn't necessarily translate to a farther-away viewing. less
