review 1: Had a lot of unfulfilled potential. Extremely irritating. I did not appreciate the ending to the story. It struck me as lazy. It seems that Jenoff got to a point where she just didn't want to describe the progress of the family as they escaped to safety. There is also a lack of resolve where the story of two of the important characters is left incomplete save for a brief narrative at the end by an elder Helena. I found the story inconclusive. I'm not fond of inconclusive stories.
review 2: This intriguing cover is certainly eye-catching, and when coupled with a storyline featuring identical twins and set during World War II, well, it’s a given that I leapt at the chance to read this one! Set in Poland, Ruth and Helena are the eldest in their family, su

The book is a bit slow to start, but the rural village setting offers a unique angle into this tumultuous time period in history. There are a few distracting instances of inconsistent perspective, along with a plot that at times stretches the bounds of plausibility, but all in all, it is an entertaining and engaging story - once the plot picks up its pace. Implausible as it may be, the story is still a moving one. I like the Polish setting and it feels fairly well-researched from a historical perspective. It may not join the tops of my list of WWII novels, but it is not at the bottom, either! less

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but I kept reading and am happy I did. Very, very good book.
