review 1: Historical fiction - approx 1912-. Begins in Netherlands,15 year old main character Minke van Aisme, goes to Amsterdam to nurse a dying woman. It's all an adventure from there- a fast marriage to the widower, a relocation to Argentina, trade in the morphine business, a child, friends and enemies-the kidnapping(?)of the child, another relocation to America(NYC), betrayal,in several forms. It was a fast read and did keep my attention. Loosely based on the life of the author's grandmother.
review 2: this was definitely an interesting book. When I started it, I loved it! The author, Pam Lewis, wrote this novel based on the life of her grandmother. It begins with Minke as a young girl in Amsterdam in 1912, who is sent to take care of a dying woman. Immedia
... moretely after the woman dies, the husband takes Minke as his wife, and they go to Argentina. Eventually they go to New York as immigrants. I really enjoyed picturing life during this period, and can imagine how difficult it must have been for poor newcomers. But - early on, it felt as if the author were writing a bad romance novel. I thought about leaving it unfinished, but decided to read what others had written in their reviews of it on Goodreads. So many people really enjoyed this story. anyway, I persuaded myself to finish it - and I'm glad I did. The actual story was interesting, although I really didn't like all the coincidences. This was definitely a summer read - quick, interesting, but not profound or especially well-written. less
