review 1: I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. The Human Body is the story of an Italian platoon stationed at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. As with a number of recent books, most about the war in Iraq, the Human Body focuses on the impact of war on the small circle of soldiers in a platoon, with a bit of each character's back story told in flashbacks.Although first published in Italy in 2012, this book was released in early October 2014 in English. Unfortunately for the author, Giordano, the date of the US release will lead to comparisons with Michael Pitre's impressive "Fives and Twenty Fives" about an American platoon in Iraq. Both books have somwhat similar plots and convey the effect a sudden and tragic event can have on soldiers. Pitre's ... morebook is very powerful and uses its narrative structure to emphasize the psychology of his characters. The Human Body has a simpler narrative structure, and employs characters that are more sterotypical (as if pulled from an old war movie---the naive rookie, the bully, the disillusioned doctor, a woman trying to fit in in a man's world)and has less effect on the reader. Although there are a few images interesting images described in The Human Body, such as a description of snow on the wedding day of a soldier's sister, the prose is simple and seldom soars.
review 2: I WON this book!!! Just got it the mail. As I was showing our two teens the book that I won on Goodreads, our Son asked me if He could read it first. I know he loves books and reads A LOT!! So I said OK. It's called "The Human Body" by Paolo Giordano,What is the book about...A platoon of young men and one woman soldier leaves Italy for one of the most dangerous places on earth. Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the Gulistan district of Afghanistan is nothing but an exposed sandpit—scorched by inescapable sunlight and deadly mortar fire. Each member has to deal with life in his own way. There is a mission that is debated and goes devastatingly awry. it's changes lives in an instant. You'll have to read this to find out how it ends and also see how it will be remembered.Thinking our teenage son is going to remember this book for a Long time, and IF I get it back before he passes it on to another of his buddies, I'll get a chance to read it too. Ha-ha. He's been asking when he can have it to start reading.... Said it sounded interesting and wondered if I was going to give it to him now as he wants to know what'll happen. Entering to win the book was easy, just go to "Explore" on the top bar of this site, you can enter a book OR just read thru what is offered. You can see the "enter to win" button.
