review 1: Gracias/Thanks by Pat Mora and illustrated by John Parra is a beautifully illustrated story about a boy who shares all of the things that he is grateful for. Each two page spread shows colorful pictures of what he has described in the text. The text is written in both Spanish and English. I personally really like reading books this way because it allows someone who doesn't speak Spanish or someone who doesn't speak English to enjoy a beautifully written story by someone who is bilingual. The main character has a Caucasian mother, a Latino father, a younger brother and sister, an Abuelita and an uncle whom he is thankful for. He shares about things in nature that he is thankful for along with school friends and teachers. In the end the author's note encourages the rea... moreder to think about all of the different things that the reader is thankful for. The illustrator has done a beautiful job creating pictures of bright and vibrant colors along with settings that could be anywhere, which allows the reader to connect no matter where they live. Appropriate for all ages and could be used with children to discuss the pleasures of life.
review 2: This book is a 2010 Honor Illustration book for the Pura Belpre Awards. This book would be great for students in K-5. Younger kids will love the bold illustrations and love hearing this book read in Spanish. Older students will love trying to read this book in Spanish. I will use this book in my class as an activity where my students tell what they are thankful for. I am even going to try to have a parent volunteer who speaks Spanish come in and read this book in Spanish to my students! less
