review 1: This was a fun book; by the end, I really wanted to know what was going to happen, and it was fun to figure things out alongside the characters. I enjoyed the story a lot and the writing slightly less. I don't read a lot of fantasy, so maybe I am not totally accustomed to some standards or different expectations? I do wish the word "husky" or "huskily" had been used significantly less frequently (always in the context of a speaking voice, never a husky young lad -- can't get enough of those).

... morearted skimming about two-thirds of the way through), but whatever it was, she didn't succeed. The plot plods; the characters are either thinly drawn or unsympathetic--or both; and the steampunk/fantasy blend doesn't really resonate as a believable world. Just skip this one. less
