review 1: Lockwood has become a bit of a darling in the poetry and literary world, deservedly so. Her recent work, to my mind, puts her in the same orbit as Dorothy Lasky and Matthea Harvey. This collection may not be as good as I would have hoped but it is an earlier work. Still a stunning use of allegorical metaphor that is playful, snide, earnest, & much more sophisticated than most who write in the same style.
review 2: Three sections, each with a long prose poem followed by some shorter free verse poems. In the longer works there is a lot of that sort of Madlibs surrealism Richard Brautigan employed exhaustively and which Woody Allen padded out a lot of his early prose. In the first & second the subject is the fluid universe of cartoons where things slip through the
... more expected cause and effect wherever there is a visual joke to be had. That sort of dislocation can take you far, though you may not be going to anyplace so much as just going along in an odd unmoored way. The third prose poem revolves around a boy and a whale, which isn't overtly cartoonish, though I kept thinking about Pinnochio throughout with little cause. The shorter pieces are the best thing here, I think. At their best they remind me of the thrill of reading Ferlinghetti for the first time, fun and funny and having such command of language that I cannot imagine the work that must have gone in to making it sound so effortless and musical. less
