review 1: I read this a few years ago, curious to learn what makes an ABNA winner. I found the plot to be a little too predictable, but I found the author's voice to be brilliant .... all this time later I still remember the passage in this book where she talks about the Afghan people - I will paraphrase - patient people who can spend all day watching goats, and when America has left, a year from now or ten years from now, they will retrieve all those weapons that have been oiled and stored in hiding places like caves and the power in this country will go right back to the people with the most guns. If you're at all interested in hearing about the Middle East from a woman with a credible voice, Patricia McArdle has crafted a fine novel that you will enjoy.

... moreook me a while to get into the book but once I did, it was wonderful. The author's minimalist writing style is Hemingway-esque and there are several scenes in the book that get only a cursory look but add so much to the story. I would have liked to have seen more in-depth telling in those areas. However, the book is emotionally compelling and since I just left Afghanistan a year ago, pretty darn accurate. It's heart breaking that we are sent over there and want to help but really just end up writing "reports" to make folks in Kabul and DC feel like they are doing something. My hope is that more and more of us do things like Patricia's solar oven to really help. less
