review 1: This story is a striking tale of the Jewish departure from Russia. It reminded me significantly of the musical The Fiddler on the Roof in the design of the story and of the story itself. There is a lot of hope infused in its pages, and the illustrations are wonderful. They are mostly pencil sketches with shocks of color wherever the most important element of the scene is located. It's a longer story, but good for readers who are learning about more troubled times in the world's past.
review 2: The Blessing Cup makes me think about traditions and blessings that my family has. So for this book I will be relating the text to myself. Text-to-self is when the story reminds you of something that might happen to yourself. It could also be that you relate to how
... morethe character is feeling or dealing with something in your life. The reason I picked text-to-self is because in the book The Blessing Cup, they have a special tea set that has been given to her parents for a wedding gift. The tea set is to give love and riches wherever it is. This part of the story related to my life because my parents have special little gifts that have been passed down or given to them from their parents or grandparents; and it is always cool to hear the story behind the item that was passed down. Another example from the book that relates to my life is how the family in the book say that they have all the love and riches when they are with each other because they are together. My mom would always say to me “the best things in life aren’t things”. She would remind me that the love of your family and friends is what gives us the greatest blessings and love. This book really made me look back and think about all the memories I have with my family members and how blessed I am to have a family who considers the history and love of our family. less

Nothing like Patricia Polacco to make a simple elegant story take on such depth and tradition.
