review 1: Carolyn WelkaMs. EmmettBook Review 7th January 2013 Letters to God by Patrick Doughtie and John Perry is a very touching and inspirational story. Throughout the story the Daugherty family goes through it all. They were the perfect family mom, dad, and 2 kids. Everything was going great until one day the father Patrick Daugherty gets into a deadly car accident and leaves the family. Maddy Dougherty the wife is now forced to get a job so she can support her two kids Tyler who is nine and Ben who is sixteen. Olivia who is Maddy’s mother and the boy’s grandmother introduced Patrick to God and what he can do. She keeps telling the family that everything will be okay; God did this for a reason, and just keep praying. Prior to Patrick’s death he would write letters to God... more just to thank him for his life and the good things that would happen. Just as they thought things couldn’t get any worse for the family; seven year old Tyler got diagnosed with brain cancer. To cope with this disease Tyler finds his dad’s letters to god and starts writing some of his own. Instead of just keeping the letters in a box like his dad did; Tyler decides to put them in the mailbox. He addresses them “To: God From: Tyler”. The mailman Brady McDaniel’s gets these letters and he is not quite sure what to do with them. Find out what the mailman does with these letters and see if Tyler survives his fight with cancer. Letters to God would classify as an inspirational drama for many reasons. First, the book really gets people thinking about life, and what we take for granted. Second, the book gives you many emotions throughout it. Most people will cry, and that’s what a drama usually does. This is a bestselling novel because something new always happens. There is never a dull moment. It keeps you on your toes and thinking the whole time. This is also a bestselling novel because you really get connected with the characters, which most books don’t do. Lastly, this book is a bestseller because you just can’t put the book down.I would recommend this book to anybody. You don’t have to be religious or believe in God to enjoy this book. Anybody can enjoy this book, and be touched by it. This book is good for people our age because sometimes in life you don’t know why things happen. Just like the Dougherty family didn’t understand why this stuff would happen to them. I would also recommend this book because you can learn something from it. All in all this is a fantastic book and I would recommend reading it.“One child’s letter. An amazing lesson in prayer. An inspiring story of hope.”Citation: Doughtie, Patrick. Letters to God. review 2: I needed tissues in hand when reading this book. I had read the book before the film came out and I wasn't expecting it to move me to tears, however it did. It is a wonderful story of a little boy with brain cancer and his family's journey of strength, trial, love, and faith. It is the true story of a little boy, although the character names are not real. This book challenged me to see that God listens and it doesn't matter what circumstance you face, God is always there to listen. I began writing my own letters to God after reading this and will probably continue. less
