review 1: It's funny how fundamental the differences are between Marvel and DC. Personally, I'm more of a Marvel guy. I want to like the off-kilter anything goes wackiness of the DCU, but it just doesn't work for me most of the time.I thought about that a lot while reading this book, because these are two female characters who absolutely would never work in the Marvel books. (Their Marvel equivalents - Scarlet Witch and Mockingbird - have many faults, but they're very different, more serious, characters.) Bloodspell is cute, it's light, and the dialogue is good. The characters are drawn in a way that doesn't sexualize them TOO overtly, which is nice. Unfortunately, the script adds some totally unnecessary boob jokes, and the plot has some annoying gaps in logic.I liked the open... moreing scenes a lot, and I very much appreciated the fact that this is just meant to be a fun superhero adventure story. If I was eleven-ish, this would be a book I read 100 times. Now, though? Not so much. It's also worth noting that this book is about 140 pages, 90 of which are the actual finished work. The rest is the pitch (why?), character designs (very nice), and the full script with some penciled pages (again, why?). I know that Dini has a loyal following, so maybe this material is more interesting to them than I think it is, but this treatment seems more in line with a deluxe Watchmen reissue than this little romp.
review 2: Fun, fun, fun! Paul Dini and Joe Quinones has made an awesome graphic novel. I've n ver been a fan of magic characters, but Zatanna is wonderful in this story. I feel like she uses magic in a more reasonable way then some other characters. I love Black Canary, especially the one married to the Green Arrow. I love that this comic in in the old DCU and not the 52. We need more stories from the old universe. The story is a fun ride. We've got Canary who's went undercover a year ago to bust a heist. That heist had a blood spell on it. Now one year later Canary needs Zatanna's help to break it. Plus we get to see great flash backs of different eras of the two women together. A great story with amazing art! I just loved it. less

Absolutely a fun read. Just remember to not take very comic seriously.
