review 1: An insightful, disturbing, and at times transformational book that had me re-thinking what really matters in life. As with so many books dealing with major crises, it doesn't provide a viable solution, and maybe that's the point. The author definitely hints at means of change and is not afraid to put the stamp of approval on other people's ideas that he is not afraid to incorporate as his own and is able to use real-world examples of what the future might look like. The disconnect is where, when and how to actually make this transition to a different way of life (for the average person) when the rest of society is lagging behind. Still a must read for those that want to try a creative mix of emotional pleas backed by harsh scientific fact.
review 2: This is
... more a solid, well thought-out book by a man who I can respect. Yet, he doesn't quite make his case. Maybe it's because there are so many examples of societal collapse (see Diamond Jared) in situations of resource overreach, that Gilding's analogy to WWII doesn't entirely ring true. Or at least not as strongly as I would like. I came away from this book wanting to be optimistic, but not being comfortable with the reasoning. less

This is a fantastically-written book on a very polarizing, and at times difficult, topic.
