review 1: Tara's mixed-faith family has never really been a source of conflict for her, until now, when she faces her upcoming bat mitzvah. Her mother is from India but converted to Judaism. Her father is Jewish. Tara isn't sure what she believes, but she loves the practices she has grown up with, mostly because they are familiar and remind her of her beloved grandfather. This middle grade chapter book does an excellent job of introducing a very contemporary American girl and her particular coming-of-age issues. The discussions she has with her Rabbi are interesting. The budding romance she experiences with her best friend Ben-o is sweet and appropriate, and Tara's friendships are also believably described. I enjoyed this book and though it may appeal to a small segment of re... moreaders, it is accessible enough that anyone can enjoy it and be introduced to different experiences. 5th grade and up.
review 2: My Basmati Bat Mitzvah tells the story of a 12 year old girl dealing with her mixed heritage (Indian and Jewish) as she prepares for her Bat Mitzvah, with some friend angst and boy issues thrown in. Several times I stopped and wondered why I was reading this book as I am not remotely culturally diverse, don't have religious ponderings and am many decades older than 12. But it was an enjoyable read so I consider it worthwhile-- even for those who can't exactly relate. less
