review 1: I have discovered why I am not a fan of House of Night. Aside from the teenage soap opera plot line, all of the Cast books (mainly P.C. Cast) write like some kind of erotic teen magic cliche. The writing is very cliche. By this point I know exactly what is going to happen about 1/3rd through the books she writes because they are all the same. I have two novels left for the House of Night series. I have come too far to not at least finish, but getting through any P.C. Cast book is a real struggle. I think there was awesome potential in the ideas that she brings and her use of mythology is great. The writing however is too sex driven and cliche. I wish I could have given this half a star instead of 1.
review 2: I am a bit torn on my opinion of this book. While I
... moreenjoyed the fact it was written as if you were a newly marked fledgling, the physiology section was utterly dull, as was the elemental portions. While some of the art pieces were interesting, many of the photographs were cheesy. Particularly the ones showing examples of marks and William Shakespeare's painting reeked of poor photoshopping. On the flip side, P.C. Cast did manage to create some interesting tales for notable historic figures and events. For example, using the love affairs between first, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra and later, Cleopatra and Mark Antony as a means of warning against the impact imprints can have on both the vampyre and the human was a good move on Cast's part. The tie-in with vampyre's involvement in Pompeii was also interesting to say the least. less
