review 1: This is a hard one for me to rate. I had to rush through it because I have a looming stack of library books that need to be read and returned and I think this is a book that shouldn't be rushed. It had all the right pieces and parts, but sometimes I felt like I needed to pull the story along a little faster. Also, since I was rushing, keeping up with all the different back and forth time changes left me a little confused as to what had happened and when. I certainly learned a lot about bees. Sometimes I felt like the "bee headers" were beautiful accompaniments to what was happening in the story, but other times they felt a little forced. 3.5, maybe?
review 2: Many readers will like this book, and a number of others with be frustrated by it. The prose is wonder
... moreful and the characters are masterfully rendered. However, though beautifully depicted, the main character is highly eccentric, frequently annoying and takes some getting used to. He tends to grow on the reader over time, and one even finds oneself unconsciously thinking in his formal manner of speaking. There are some remarkable insights that make the read worthwhile, even though the plot is slow and predictable. Discussion of bee culture and behavior is interesting, but there's a bit too much it. Despite these flaws, the strengths of this novel are astonishing. less

This is more like a two and a half. There was just too much info on bees & beekeeping for me.
