review 1: I enjoyed this read. The characters were cleverly built around the bees. I frankly loved the bees! How the characters and plot paralleled the lives of the bees, and how it it slowly revealed really impressed me. The sensitivity of the hives is a wonderful metaphor for the charactersI liked the lonely bee man, Albert. Although he was a bit stunted emotionally, I thought as I began reading. But as his story developed he turned out to be much deeper than I thought. It was a sad mystery. The murder of the Bee-Ladies. But their lives were really the underlying mystery. I'm still thinking about Albert, he is old now. I hope the detective "inherits" his bees!
review 2: Much like the last book I read, I almost put this one down because it was slow to start. A
... morend again, I am glad I forged on and gave it a chance. A sweet story of a bygone time, it involves the reader in the mysterious murder of two old "bee ladies" and the tale of their long time neighbor. An in depth lesson in beekeeping teaches us how much bees relate to the story of people. At least in this book. And though at times it seems to go too far into the mechanics of keeping hives, it really serves a purpose in this novel.Stay with it and you will love it! less
