review 1: Penny Kittle is a real teacher who offers a thorough guide to teaching literacy, one that is structured, yet allowing for student independence. I agree that students must read everyday, and I will try to implement many of her ideas in my classroom. I especially find her conferencing system to be an effective tool. Her lack of thematic units is somewhat unconventional today, but every time we read, we make connections to the world.

I'm now recovering from seeing English as a subject that shoves classic lit and culture down teens' throats. What's the point of teaching great lit if your students don't even read it? Can't read it? Don't want to read it? Is "Lord of the Flies," "Jane Eyre," "The Great Gatsby" for everyone? Absolutely not. Start where they are.This book details an irrefutable (IMO) logic for nurturing students' independent love of reading, renewed my own love for books, and perhaps most importantly, provides practical ideas for reading conferences, writing workshops, building a classroom library, giving book talks, and dozens of other ways to nurture student's "book love."I will borrow and steal from Penny Kittle throughout all of my days as a teacher, her words ringing in my head:"Teaching is about hope and when we lose sight of that, the minute we say "I can't," or "That kid won't," we should walk away--leave the school and start walking." less
