review 1: I waver between giving this book one or two stars because the writing is technically good, but the storyline is terrible. It's kind of like the author couldn't decide whether he wanted to write a political thriller or just a really long story about rich people enjoying expensive food and wine (which he goes to staggering extremes to explain in every detail during almost every scene). I read books for interesting character and plot development, not to hear how often they eat fancy food and drink expensive alcohol. The storyline itself is confusing and forgettable. There are far too many characters to follow, and none of them are fleshed out at all. It seems that the main character has a drinking problem and enjoys golf way too much to be considered normal, and that's abo... moreut as much as we ever learn about him. The "bad guy" only appears in two scenes total, which left me wondering what exactly I had been reading in between those scenes. A quick look back through the book showed me that the rest of it was basically drivel about alcohol, fancy food, and having random sex in random places with some random woman in a relationship that was totally asinine and unbelievable.I'll give Pete Morin kudos on his actual ability to write, which some of these self-publishing authors sadly lack. I think he has the capability to write something awesome that's somewhere along these lines, but this attempt didn't really work at all, at least not for me. If I find something else by him I might check it out to see if his style has improved at all, but I think it's a safe bet to stay away from this debut. Unless you're obsessed with playing golf and drinking top-shelf liquor every night, that is.
review 2: To begin, this is a DAMN good read! Pete Morin has produced a gem of a debut novel that I recommend without reservation. The reader cannot help but root for the protagonist, Paul Forte, as he fights to avoid the snares of corrupt politicians and faces a preposterous criminal indictment based on the fact that people like to play golf with him. The action is fast-paced and laced with delightful witticisms. Not all is rosy and upbeat in Forte's life, however, and along the way he must struggle with the after-effects of a sad divorce, an intriguing new girlfriend with a history of her own, and the machinations of a malicious federal prosecutor.Morin asks the question, just what exactly is "influence peddling?" When do the rules become so vague and subjective that they can be used against anybody at the whim of people with power? This theme provides the back beat to the story's frothy narration and renders the novel more than an entertainment. This one will make you think for a long time after you've read the final page. less
