review 1: This is a picture book for 4-8 year olds about a class of students who all receive identical go-cart kits for the Going Places race. Rafael follows the instructions and builds a perfect go-cart that looks just like the one pictured in the kit's instructions. He is very proud of his final product but is bewildered when his neighbor Maya builds a different vehicle which looks nothing like a go-cart. This sparks an idea which leads Rafael and Maya to work as a team to build the winning vehicle, one that is unique among all others in the race. This is wonderful story about thinking outside the box and the value of teamwork.
review 2: I invariably enjoy all of the Reynolds' books, but I especially appreciated the message in this one of literally thinking outside
... more the box. When a class of kids each receives an identical go-cart kit, Rafael and Maya team up and make something far beyond what is in the basic instructions by observing nature, which already has things figured out. Great messages about the benefits of teamwork and using one's imagination! Definitely ties in with the STEAM concepts as well. less
