Roy Grace
review 1: I am enjoying the Roy Grace series but this fourth novel is not as good as the previous three. The first third of the book flips between two timelines and several storylines and it just does not flow very well. Having just read 'I am pilgrim' which does a similar thing but in a very slick way it puts this novel in its place. The story itself is interesting enough, if a little predictable. This is good as a bit of quick reading but don't expect a particularly intelligent read. I hope the rest of the series can serve up some of the magic that Dead Simple created.
review 2: Peter James is one of the most talented crime writers there is. His 'Roy Grace' series are some of the best in the genre and so popular. The 'Dead'/ 'Roy Grace' books are all similar in their s
... moretyle and plots - short, punchy chapters, and fast-paced action. They all draw you in quickly and are very readable. The reliable and consistent references to local landmarks make imagery strong and readers all have the same images in their head - I think these traits mean the books could make great films. If anything, the books can be a bit too similar and lacking originality from novel to novel, but they do the job. There isn't masses of complexity, depth or originality within the plots and characters but there is enough. Each book can be read on their own, but the links between the books (such as references to his team and his former wife Sandy), make it enjoyable for loyal readers. less
