review 1: I liked that it brought up some ideas to follow, but it hit it on the nose in some ways, and unfortunately seemed to drop the ball in other ways. For one thing, we are reading about teens, which means that they don't always make the best decisions like blowing up a building. I mean, that's making a statement, but mostly it is just telling them you exist and tipping your hand, not setting yourself up and giving yourself like a name like it means. The only thing that really redeemed that most of the crew then decided to not be villains. But overall, while interesting, it was a little to on the nose. I mean, it was a bit of an eye roll for Brad's brother having oil sponsors, but when the government is really, basically consciously, evil, then no. Why can't we have a deb... moreate over this that is a little less black and white, that's why we're reading about the villains right? And why do they have to dress to hysterically like villains? Why not dress up normally or even in a parody of the heroes costume? I mean, I suppose the idea is that society is going to be the villain, but you're trying to make it a better place, even if you have to rip down everything to do so (which yeah, makes you a villain, but your opponents are also villains). Is that it? Are you acknowledging that you know what you are doing is wrong but society has forced your hand? See, some of it is interesting. But other parts have been explored, and I felt more like I was reading a prequel. Like, I should have read all about this guy before in other books. Whether from his perspective, or maybe a "heroes" perspective and now the author had come out with a book about the villains back story and how and why he decided to take the path he did. The book is just lacking some grandeur, or something that would really make it hit the way I think it really could. I'm not even saying I want a sequel, I'm just saying that it is solidly good.
review 2: I've read a few too many superhero novels in the past couple of months for this to be anything more than middling for me. The pacing was too condensed for the story it was trying to tell, and the characters are never really explored in enough depth to make me actually care much about them. It feels like it's trying to be V.E. Schwab's "Vicious" for a younger set, but the petty teenage dramas take precedence over the government/global thriller without giving much insight into the protagonist or the antagonists. It's a decent story, but it would probably have been better as a two or three-part series, because as it is, it gives short shrift to both the internal and external drama. less

For a story about a super-genius, this kid isn't very smart.
