Book Review: Queen Of Hearts by Colleen Oakes

Hey Guys!

Today I am doing a bonus review. The reason for this will become clear very soon. But the bonus book is Queen Of Hearts by Colleen Oakes. So let’s just get straight to it.

I have had my eye on this book ever since it first came out. it is always popping up on my goodreads/amazon recommendations. Over the last few months I have heard a few people talking about it and praising it, so I finally decided to just give it a go. And I ended up DNFing it.

I never DNF books. I always just try and power through and get to the end, because you know, sometimes your opinion on a book changes right at the end. The last time I DNF’d a book it was in the spring of 2016. That’s over a year and a half ago. It just isn’t something I do. so naturally, it is safe to say that I didn’t like this book.

It’s not that there is anything wrong with it. the story had the potential to be brilliant. I know everyone whose read it is praising the political element of it. but for me it was just so boring. I managed to struggle my way to about 200 pages before giving up. That is 2 thirds of the way through it, but I just couldn’t bring myself to struggle through the last 100. I feel like nothing has happened in the story up to this point. I’m reading and reading and I keep expecting something, anything, to happen and it just doesn’t. and I am so bored.

I might have been slightly more inclined to try and finish it if I had at least liked the characters. But I really don’t. they are all just very flat. I don’t feel as if any of them have any personality. I spent the whole time I was reading being annoyed at the main character because she just spends the whole time acting like a spoilt little child. She doesn’t think, she doesn’t consider others, she is just not a good character. I know she is the future Queen of hearts, evil and all that, but she is just so flat in this book. She is being portrayed as a stereotypical future evil queen and I cannot stand it. it is just so boring to read.

And it is honestly a sham that I disliked this book so much because I have heard a lot of people praising it. and I did really like the descriptions of wonderland as a place. It was so whimsical and had proper Carol vibes to it. I just didn’t think that there was really any story happening.

1 out of 5

And there we have it. I am gutted that I didn’t like this and that I ended up DNFing it. I just could not force myself to read any more. if I had, I would have put myself in a slump. Such a shame. Have you read this one? What did you think about it? I hope that you have enjoyed todays bonus review and I will see you all again soon.
