review 1: I really, really want to like Peter Straub, but I made it midway through this little novella, thinking "well this is not great but not the worst thing I've ever read| and then got a nice description of boys molesting each other, complete with a drizzle of semen. Nope. NOPE NOPE NOPE. WHY ARE MALE HORROR WRITERS SO OBSESSED WITH (THEIR) PENISES. Also got the feeling this had been tossed off to the printer to fulfill some contractual obligation. I'm going to try to read Koko as I've heard it's his best, but man, my hopes are not high. You want scary without the dicks? Try Evenson or Ligotti.
review 2: Short and sweet...and VERY disturbing with out being pornographic with the violence. Mr. Straub has been around forever and I haven't read any of his stories in a ... morelooong time. So this was a very good way to refamiliarize myself with his writing. Received this book for a Halloween book exchange that Neil Gaiman has been promoting. This is such an excellent idea which I hope to take part in every year. Anyway this book is one of the books I received for the book exchange. Just perfect! less
