review 1: It's the kind of book that makes me wish I could give half stars. This book deserve half a star for the following reasons: 1. The font is clear2. The paper printed on is the usual paperback paper - ordinary but functional and lovely on its own. 3. The page numbers and page breaks are done in non-obstructive ways.Beside that, this book is a complete mess, in the way that many people would read back to their dark-and-edgey twelve year old self's wannabe rebellion in embarrassment. Animal torturing, ritual following, sadomasochistic homosexual rapist? Come on now, surely we could add pushing little old ladies out of zebra crossing to the list too? If it's just a little bit more pathetic it would be superb comedy, instead we just get a check list of failed shock factors. For so... moremething that is merely 89 pages long, it achieved the amazing feat of managed to be as hollow as it gets. I suspect the writer needed to put in extra effort just to make it that devoid of anything of worth. For some reasons, I thought this book was written back in the days when people took Freud seriously, and it laid out the fundation for the reductive psychopath/sociopath (I don't think the writer here could tell the difference) cardboard cut out genre. Which is fine, everything starts somewhere and hopefully they become surpassed in the future. Except turned out that this book is written in 2009. No excuses whatsoever, then. Just do yourself a favour and read Daily Mail online. It is more substantial and less sensationalised bullshit feast. Somehow.
review 2: Ok, I can understand wanting to "prequel" Keith from "A Dark Matter." And yes, I found the whole Hitchcock "Shadow of a Doubt" references and overall "gloss" for the story very clever. But, this struck me more as if Straub was going "Hostel 3" meets "Shadow of a Doubt." Didn't work. Didn't work at all. What makes Straub usually so brilliant is his understatedness -- glimpes of the horrible, not long lingering close ups. less

gee
So dark and twisted for such a short story. Great depth. Will read more by this author.
