Shortcut Man
review 1: I had high hopes for "Shortcut Man" but it didn't do it for me. There is nothing particularly wrong with the book, but I just found it too genre driven. In ways it reminds me of Pynchon's "Inherent Vice" which i think is a better book. Also the lead character didn't grab me that made me want to read on. But saying that the book is totally readable (almost in one sitting), and I have friends who love it. I just didn't feel that it was that hot of a book.
review 2: I enjoyed this very short novel, probably because I love noir novels set in LA, especially Ellroy, but also because the dialog was so well constructed. The plot is not that believable but the characters come alive under Sturges' light touch, especially Lynette. You can read this book in a matter
... moreof hours, but you will be entertained. The main character's profession is a great idea and the opening chapter, in which he shows how he operates, is perhaps one of the best in the book. Like a delicious snack, this book will be enjoyed and then forgotten. However, it is worth the read. less

Very shallow and misogynistic, yet a bit entertaining.
